Flynn took a very serious interest in teaching himself practical skills like writing and cooking when he was younger so he could do more odd jobs around the Lower Quarter. When he first started writing, he practiced by keeping a diary journal of daily events (which Yuri probably mocked him for). He still keeps it up daily, and there's sometimes where he'll write short letters to Yuri in his entries, especially after Yuri left the knights and in the aftermath of Zaude. He's got all his old journals stashed away in his room at the capitol, neatly filed in chronological order.
