I think it gets mentioned in canon that he literally learned to cook in self-defense... Possibly this is how he got acquainted with the lady who runs the inn! After she found him lying half-dead in a gutter from Flynn's cooking. No he probably started off watching her while he peeled potatoes or something and worked his way up from there.
