Gosh I love that question. This is gonna get rambley and a lot of headcanon about Yuri's... head. AND ALSO I DON'T THINK THIS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION EXACTLY so feel free to ask for clarification...

So for the first SEVENTEEN YEARS of Yuri's life it was only Flynn Flynn Flynn; he only had Flynn and Flynn was the only person he depended on! They were orphans, and while they were raised sort of communally by the Lower Quarter (from what I understand) they were exposed enough to know exactly what was wrong with the empire.

And then he lost Flynn (to the knights) and he lost all his idealism PRETTY VIOLENTLY AND SUDDENLY and also his purpose. Honestly I imagine it left him in a kind of vacuum, which he tried to fill by defending the lower quarter except half the time he just made things worse for the lower quarter and ESPECIALLY for himself, but even when he managed to do good it was NEVER ENOUGH because Flynn, who abandoned him, was always doing better and everything he could do was only a temporary bandaid. So that is like 3 straight years of feeling like shit and being by himself and doing everything alone (because Repede is a great dog but not as emotionally fulfilling as a human being!!) Yuri VERY CLEARLY doesn't like himself very much for the first half of the game. He says to Rita--"Estelle is a good person not like you or me."

So YURI LOWELL IS A LONE WOLF. Lowell apparently means 'little wolf' and he has a crap ton of artes with wolf in the title, including but not limited to "lone wolf charge". And it's funny because despite everything, Yuri is a GOOD party leader--and he is clearly the party leader. He would make a rocking knight captain, tbh; he is always the one who is We're doing this, then that, take a break, let's move, etc etc and he doesn't consult anyone and he doesn't hesitate which means he ALSO!!! doesn't. show. weakness. He uses his position as party leader and his snarky personality to establish and keep distance. As to WHY he does this...

I think most of the few times Yuri is honestly emotional he is BEING BITTER AT FLYNN (there’s a lot of joking about Yuri being tsun for Flynn but there’s tsun and there’s bitterness) I think there is just a stupid part of Yuri that is just... how does I relationship with someone not Flynn?? And why would I want to??? I not a good person and if FLYNN larked off no-one else is gonna stick around. He implies a couple times during the game that he thinks Flynn is too busy for him, and it’s really kind of a horrible cycle of being TOO on top of his shit and perpetuating this myth that he doesn’t need anyone (ESPECIALLY FLYNN!!!111). Honestly I think one of Vesperia’s backburner issues is Yuri learning to have relationships with people who AREN’T Flynn and also forgiving Flynn for leaving and forgiving himself for failing at being a knight and all that entails.

So we VERY rarely see Yuri, while he is party leader, be anything but snarky. THIS SHORT CLIP is like. All you need to know about Yuri and his party. And it’s adorable. SO Yuri pretends he doesn’t have feelings, and when Yuri does have feelings about his party they are normally POSSESSIVE feelings that come out when he is snarlingly pissed off. Yuri is actually pretty vicious and possessive when 'his' people are involved; VERY different from his casual snark.

In Aather... Yuri’s past kind of fucked him up. :D; He just got a SLEW of negative memories with almost NO context--him killing Ragou (bad guy), him killing the Don (good guy), his captain dying in front of him, Flynn YELLING at him and calling him useless (in Yuri’’s mind). And Yuri just did not have the hardness OR the motivation (constantly being surrounded by party) to just kind of repress it down and move on. That’s where Vincent comes in...! At that point Vincent had already kind of snapped in front of him more than once, and then when it kind of became too much for Yuri Vincent sort of game him permission and space to NOT BE OKAY. And it was because he had that space that he realized he didn’t WANT to be trapped in his past. So when Yuri finally got a memory that simultaneously tipped him over and stabled him out he realized it was kind of bullshit to be an AMNESIAC WORRIED ABOUT THE PAST. Right now he is actually in a pretty healthy space of... fuck the past! \o/ he learned that he probably saved the world, so shit back home has clearly been taking care of; and he’s tired of seeing the people he loves (Raven, Vincent) obsessed with what’s already happened and can’t be undone, and he’s realized that. In Aather he has a new life and new and different relationships so he is just gonna be a toppy party leader at all the shit that comes his way and also maybe be healthier about it????

TL;DR: YURI HAS BEEN LET DOWN BY THE PEOPLE AND INSTITUTIONS OF HIS PAST AND IT MAKES HIM CAGEY AND NOT WANTING TO HAVE FEELINGS AND SUPER, SUPER (too) INDEPENDENT. IN AATHER YURI WAS AMBUSHED BY HIS PAST AND IN CONSEQUENCE HAS LEARNED TO RELY ON PEOPLE MORE (maybe).

Tell me about Lloyd as a protagonist.

IT DOESN'T :D I love this essay but I also want to know if that divide has changed his relationships with his canonmates specifically!

YOU WORK ON THAT WHILE I FIGURE OUT HOW TO TALK ABOUT LLOYD'S PROTAGONISTING
